Sumter School District recruits substitutes to work in the place of regular employees for teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses, clerical employees, custodians, food service workers, and bus drivers. Requirements vary for each type of substitute.

Purpose and qualifications

Sumter School District seeks to employ highly qualified substitutes to staff classrooms in the absence of regular teachers. A minimum of an Associate’s degree or 60 college credit hours  is required for substitute teachers unless otherwise approved by the district (i.e. Career Center instructors, special exemptions).

Highly Qualified Substitute

The substitute class is also a requirement for being a substitute. This class is offered on an as needed basis by the school district at no charge to approved substitutes. However, preregistration is required. For all other positions, a high school diploma is required. For positions such as nurses and other licensed professionals, a professional work license is required.

Application and Hiring Procedures

Substitutes are required to file an application online with the Office of Human Resources at 1345 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter SC 29150. Interviews may be scheduled by the Office of Human Resources after the following are submitted:

    1. Completed application
    2. Three written recommendations
    3. College Transcript
    4. Teaching Certificate (if applicable)
    5. Substitute Teacher Training Class
    6. TB Test
